Australia's breakfast in one bite: hot buttered toast scraped with a thin, salty, savoury layer of Vegemite. The trick isn't cooking — it's the restraint to spread it thin.

Australian everyday breakfast — Vegemite, a thick dark spread made from leftover brewers' yeast extract, was developed in Melbourne in 1922 and is one of Australia's most recognisable national foods. Eaten most classically as a thin scrape on hot buttered toast, it is intensely salty and rich in B vitamins.

Toast the bread until golden and crisp.
Butter it while it's still hot, so the butter melts right into the toast.
💡 Butter first, and generously — it's the base layer that balances Vegemite's salt. Buttering hot toast also softens it slightly so the Vegemite spreads without tearing.
Scoop only a tiny amount of Vegemite and scrape it into a thin, even layer — you should be able to see the toast through it in places.
💡 This is the whole skill and the mistake every newcomer makes: Vegemite is intensely salty and concentrated, so a thick jam-like layer is overwhelming. Think 'scrape', not 'spread'.
Cut in half and eat straight away, while the toast is hot and crisp.
