Fairy Bread

Every Australian childhood birthday on a plate: soft white bread, buttered edge to edge, pressed into rainbow hundreds-and-thousands and cut into little triangles. No cooking, four ingredients, thirty seconds of joy.

Australian children's party classicFairy bread — buttered white bread covered in hundreds and thousands and cut into triangles — is a beloved fixture of Australian and New Zealand children's birthday parties, appearing in Australian references from the 1920s onward. Its name may nod to a Robert Louis Stevenson poem of the same title.

  1. Tip the hundreds and thousands into a wide shallow bowl or onto a plate with a rim.

  2. Spread each slice of bread with a generous, even layer of soft butter, taking it right out to all four edges and corners.

💡 Bald spots are the classic fail: any unbuttered patch or dry edge holds no sprinkles and looks patchy. The butter is the glue, so cover every millimetre.

  3. Press each slice, butter-side down, firmly into the sprinkles, then lift and check the coverage.

  4. Sprinkle a few extra hundreds and thousands over any thin patches and press again so the whole surface is a solid confetti of colour.

  5. With a sharp knife, cut the crusts off if you like, then cut each slice diagonally into four little triangles.

💡 Cut with a clean downward press, not a sawing motion — sawing drags the sprinkles off the soft bread and squashes the slice.

  6. Arrange triangles on a platter and serve straight away, while the bread is still soft.

💡 Tipps

  • This is an honestly tiny 'recipe' — assembly, not cooking. The only real skills are buttering to the very edge and using fresh soft bread; everything else is just having fun.
  • Make it just before serving. Buttered bread left out goes stale and stiff within an hour or two, and stale fairy bread is a sad thing.
  • For a party, use a cookie cutter to stamp out stars or hearts before pressing into the sprinkles — the offcuts are the cook's snack.
